Yasabel N. Gibson

November 27, 1928 — February 27, 2024

A lifelong resident of Orchard Park, Yasabel Newton Gibson, age 95, died at her home on February 27, 2024, after a brief illness. Born Yasabel Eastman Newton on November 27, 1928, she was the daughter of Charles M. Newton and Antoinette Eastman Newton spending her childhood on the family farm on Newton Road in Orchard Park. Mrs. Gibson, known by her nickname Yazie, attended Hamburg High School and graduated from Buffalo State College with a teaching degree in 1950. She taught for many years in the Hamburg school system at Union Street School where she taught first grade. Mrs. Gibson had a lifelong interest in both family genealogy and local history. Her family connections to the Western New York area include Hezakiah Salisbury, the first publisher of the Gazette, Buffalo’s first newspaper, and her grandfather JC Newton, the first supervisor of Orchard Park. In her retirement, Mrs. Gibson volunteered at the Jolls House in Orchard Park, eventually becoming curator for the organization. She also was a member of the Mayflower Society and the Abigail Fillmore Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition, she was a member of the Orchard Park Antique Study Group and the Eastern Star chapter of the Masonic Temple. Private memorial services and burial will be held for Yasabel Gibson at the Ezekiel Smith Cemetery on Bunting Road Orchard Park. She is survived by her son, James Gibson (Carla), her brother, Charles Newton (Tammy), her grandchildren, Amanda (Matt), Alyssa (Anthony), Drew, and Tommy, and great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
