Harrington – Virginia F. "Ginny" (nee Hornbarger) October 12, 1928-December 21, 2023. “Ginna” (to her siblings), “Ginny” (to her friends), and “Nini” or “Mema” (to her grandchildren) was a ray of sunshine for all who knew her—eternally kind, warm and gracious. She was a perfectionist whose fastidiousness extended from her wardrobe to her baking. Her family remembers countless dinners with her famous rolls, individually tailored birthday cakes, and homemade pies. She was devoted to her family, and her absence will leave a hole in our hearts. Named for the native state of her father and his ancestors, Ginny grew up in Pittsburgh, the daughter of an engineer, Earl H. Hornbarger, and a flapper turned social worker, Charlotte Drake Hornbarger. She graduated from Randolph Macon Women’s College in 1950. Two years later in June 1952, she married Charles F. Harrington. After many years of a loving, though sometimes frustration- laced marriage, Charles predeceased Ginny in 2015. Ginny would demur any compliment to her own intelligence, but she was a woman with a keen mind who never stopped learning or growing throughout her life. She devoted her time to numerous civic organizations, including the Junior League of Buffalo and the PEO, and she was a docent at the Buffalo Historical Society. She was an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and of the Holloway Memorial Chapel in Canada. She delighted spending summers in Canada tending her garden and hosting her grandchildren at her Crescent Beach home (though sightings of her on the beach itself were rare). She loved traveling, and she and her husband journeyed to China, Egypt, Spain (frequently), England and other parts of Europe. She adored classical music and theater, and she was a longtime subscriber to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchard Park Symphony, the Kavinoky Theater, the Studio Arena Theater, and the Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-lake. She was known to demonstrate her own dancing talents when pressed, and she was once on the Kleinhan’s stage in a top hat and tails for a dance benefit. The Christmas Day she danced the Charleston will live in her family’s memory forever. She was a loving mother to four children: Bill (Jane), Rick, Sue (John Fine), and Chari. She was a cherished mother-in-law to Diane Ceravolo and a second mother to her family’s Spanish exchange student, Maria Teresa Mira-Perceval Pastor, with whom she maintained a lifelong bond. She was a devoted, adoring grandmother to Melissa, Emilie, Charles, Ali, Gabby, Lu, Caroline, Ricky, Charlie, and Joey; and great-grandmother to Dashiell and Reed Virginia. She is predeceased by two brothers and one sister, and she is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. She was wonderful, and nothing will ever be quite as “thrilling” without her. The family will receive visitors on Friday, January 12 from 3 PM to 7 PM at F. E. Brown Sons Funeral Home, 6575 E Quaker St., Orchard Park, NY. A memorial service is scheduled for January 13, 2024 at 3:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 724 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo. Donations in Virginia’s memory would be welcomed by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and Westminster Presbyterian Church. Condolences may be sent to P.O. Box 685 Orchard Park, NY 14127.
