Hunsberger, Lurly L., Ph.D, of Orchard Park, was born on July 28, 1936, and passed away peacefully on August 26, 2026, at Fox Run. Lurly was predeceased by her parents Victor and Francis (Barrows) Hunsberger, her brother Bing Hunsberger, and her dear friends Gordon and Carol Poecking. She is survived by the Poecking children, David and Kevin, who are not only like her closest family, but who became her caregivers in her later years.
Lurly was born in Nebraska during the Great Depression-not an easy time and place! Her family relocated to Fort Collins, Colorado, where her father was a proprietor of a bookshop. Lurly studied education in Buffalo and then moved for two years to a women's college in France.
While working as a French teacher back in the U.S., Lurly put herself through graduate school at SUNY Buffalo, and in 1979 obtained her doctorate in education. She shifted from the classroom into educational administration, eventually serving for many years as the principal at Orchard Park Middle School, from where she retired in 1994.
In addition to French, Lurly could also chat in German, and had visited many European countries. She was fond of gardening and cats. Her most recent cat, Muffett, lived with her at Fox Run until the cat's death in 2018. In her later years, Lurly wrote and published short works of creative fiction, including children's stories.
Lurly was fond of sending Christmas cards and other greetings through the U.S. Post by affixing to the outside of the envelope a large collection of low-value stamps, thus lending color and character to the letters.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, September 3rd, from 5 to 7 PM, at the F E Brown Sons Funeral Home, 6575 East Quaker Street, Orchard Park, NY where a Funeral Service will be held on Friday, September 4th at 10 AM. Interment to follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.
