In Memoriam: John Henry “Jack” Hinners, Jr.
Orchard Park mourns the loss of one of its most beloved residents, John Henry “Jack” Hinners, Jr., who peacefully passed away on February 9th, 2024, leaving behind cherished memories and a legacy of service and kindness. Born in the Bronx of New York City on June 2, 1936 to Eleanor and John Hinners, Jack made Buffalo his home in 1960, where he began a distinguished career in banking that spanned nearly four decades. His contributions to institutions such as Western Bank, Gold Dome, and Key Bank will be remembered as a testament to his dedication and unwavering work ethic.
Throughout his 64 years as a cherished member of the Greater Buffalo community, Jack’s impact extended far beyond his professional achievements. He was a pillar of Orchard Park Presbyterian Church for half a century, serving with devotion as a Deacon, Elder, and contributing his time and talents to numerous committees. Jack was also a dedicated volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, utilizing his skills as a self-made handyman and serving as a Master Plumber, embodying the spirit of giving back to those in need. His skilled hands brought to life countless projects and renovations, each one a testament to his ingenuity and craftsmanship. Jack also lent his expertise and energy to various civic organizations, including the Orchard Park Chamber of Commerce, the Orchard Park Council for the Arts, and the Orchard Park Library Board of Trustees.
But it was on the greens of the East Aurora Country Club where Jack truly came alive. As one of the club's longest-standing members, he reveled in the camaraderie of the Twilight and Mulligans Men's Leagues. Jack's commitment to the club extended beyond the fairways, as he served as a volunteer and committee member for the International Junior Masters Tournament for an impressive 45 years, leaving an enduring impact on generations of young golfers.
Jack's life was marked by love and companionship. Jack shared his life with his beloved wife, Sue (Patton Gray) Hinners, until her passing in 1993. In time, Jack’s heart found companionship once again when he married Mary (Keefe) Hinners. Mary was Jack’s steadfast partner, enjoying world travels, shows at Shea’s Buffalo Theater and NYC’s Broadway, golf, and activities with their many friends. Jack’s love extended to his sons, Bob (Susanne) Gray and Bruce (Karen) Gray, and his legacy lives on through his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.
Jack will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and will be remembered for his faith in God, his exuded warmth and generosity, and his unwavering commitment to a finely grilled steak and a Tito’s on the rocks.
A memorial service to celebrate Jack's life will be held on Monday, February 26 at 11am at Orchard Park Presbyterian Church, followed by a luncheon at the East Aurora Country Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in Jack’s honor may be made to the Orchard Park Presbyterian Church (

Though Jack may no longer walk among us, his spirit will continue to shine brightly. Forever in our hearts, Jack will be dearly missed and fondly remembered. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the love and gratitude of a grateful community.
