John Francis Grant
March 4, 1929 - March 9, 2023
John Grant was from the small hamlet of Piffard, NY, south of Rochester. It is said that he is the only person ever to be born in the town since his mother broke her leg near the due date and was unable to get to the hospital in Geneseo.
“Little John”, the youngest of four children, stood 6’4” and was a natural for his high school basketball team, which he led to the county championship as a senior. He was also class president. Following high school, he initially attended Sampson college, however the Korean war soon interrupted his plans to become a surveyor. He spent the majority of his two years in the army on the front lines in active combat with the 2nd Chemical Mortar Batallion–better known as the “Red Dragons” because of their colorful arm patch. He was one the unit’s small handful of soldiers who survived to eventually return home.
Once back in Western New York, John was motivated to make the most of his opportunities and utilized the G.I. bill to attain a masters in ceramic engineering from Alfred University–a local university nationally revered for its ceramic program. He wore this pedigree proudly throughout his interesting career.
While at the Corning Glass Works, John worked on several high tech projects, such as developing the windshield glass for the military’s X-15 supersonic aircraft. While this work was fulfilling, his proudest accomplishment was meeting the love of his life, Anne Dalton–the pretty girl in the payroll department who always had her dog at her feet.
John later joined the Ferro Corporation in Buffalo, where he ascended to Technical Director and accumulated over fifty patents throughout his career. It was not unusual for a technical issue at a production facility halfway around the world to lead to a call to Buffalo, and John subsequently hopping a plane. His career took him throughout the U.S., South America, Europe, and the Far East.
John and Anne raised their family in Orchard Park. He was an active volunteer to many organizations, including Nativity Church, the Boy Scouts of America, and Meals On Wheels. John spent his final years at Fox Run in Orchard Park, where he enjoyed playing euchre and bocce ball, and celebrating mass with neighbors.
John was preceded in death by Anne, his brother Bill, and his sisters Rita Grant, and Mary Schultz. He is survived by his son Timothy, and daughter Linda Peddle. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren who he adored.
